Help That Doesn’t Slip: Finding True Stability in Psalm 121

Pastor Alex Jordan

Where does your help really come from?

In a world that constantly promises security—through success, relationships, money, or personal effort—it’s easy to trust things that look sturdy but can’t actually hold our weight. Psalm 121 reminds us of a deeper truth: real help doesn’t slip.

This message explores what it means to depend on God for stability, not just progress, and how false footing can quietly replace faith if we’re not paying attention.

False Footing: When Security Isn’t What It Seems

In construction, false footing refers to temporary support—something meant to look stable, but never designed to last.

Spiritually, false footing often shows up in familiar places:

  • A promotion that makes us feel secure

  • A relationship we believe will save us

  • Financial stability that promises peace

  • Our own careful planning and precautions

Psalm 121 pushes back against this illusion:

“He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber.” (Psalm 121:3)

God doesn’t overlook our struggles. He doesn’t grow tired. He doesn’t miss the moment when the ground beneath us begins to shift.

The enemy, however, whispers something different: Trust this instead. Trust money. People. Possessions. The thing that worked last time.

But here’s the truth: The world can’t take away what it never gave you.

False footing feels convincing because it often worked before—until it didn’t.

The Temptation of Self-Reliance

One of the most dangerous moments in our faith is when things are mostly going well.

We start thinking:

  • I trusted all the rocks before this one—why would this fail?

  • I did everything right before this relationship—why wouldn’t it last?

  • My boss says I’m essential—why would this job disappear?

The temptation to trust ourselves grows strongest when we’ve stacked a lot of “good steps.” But Scripture reminds us that God is not impressed by self-reliance.

He’s not looking for independence. He’s inviting dependence.

Fatherly Foothold: A Place to Stand and Keep Going

Unlike false footing, a foothold is a secure position that allows you to move forward safely.

In Matthew 14:22–33, Jesus sends the disciples into a storm—not by accident, but on purpose. While they struggle against the wind and waves, Jesus comes to them walking on the water.

When Peter steps out of the boat and begins to sink, Jesus doesn’t hesitate. He reaches out immediately.

“You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” (Matthew 14:31)

Jesus doesn’t shame Peter for stepping out.He rescues him when fear replaces trust.

This moment reveals a powerful truth: The One who calls you is the One who keeps you.

Progress or “Pregress”?

Sometimes we confuse faith with speed.

We want to be further ahead than we are:

  • Spiritually

  • Financially

  • Relationally

  • Organizationally

We arrive at one place and immediately try to jump to the next.

But rushing ahead of God’s timing isn’t progress—it’s pregress: trying to live in a future God hasn’t placed us in yet.

Psalm 121 reassures us that God watches over our coming and going—both where we are and where we’re headed.

Communion: The Ultimate Secure Footing

Psalm 121 promises that the Lord will keep us from all harm and watch over our lives forever. That promise finds its fulfillment in Jesus.

At the cross, Christ secured our footing once and for all—nailing everything that separated us from God so we could stand firm in grace.

When doubts rise and storms threaten our balance, we remember:

  • Our help comes from the Lord

  • He will not let our foot slip

  • He watches over us now and forever

Where Does Your Help Come From?

Psalm 121 begins with a question:

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from?”

The answer hasn’t changed.

Our help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

If you’re feeling unstable, unsure, or tempted to rely on something that can’t truly hold you—this is your invitation to step back onto solid ground.

Because the help God offers doesn’t slip. And the One who calls you is the One who keeps you.
