The Life the Spirit Provides | How the Holy Spirit Makes Us Steady, Strong & Present (John 14–16)

Associate Pastor James Terhune

Last week, we talked about Spiritual Insurance—walking through Galatians 5 and the contrast between the sins of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit.

But today, I want to take that a step further.

I want to talk about the life the Spirit provides.

Because Jesus didn’t just come to forgive your sins—He came to give you life.

Jesus Came to Give Life

The word “life” appears 36 times in the Gospel of John—far more than any other gospel. That’s not accidental.

Right from the beginning, John makes it clear:

“In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” — John 1:4–5 (NIV)

John starts with “In the beginning…”—echoing Genesis 1:1.Creation began with life, and now through Jesus, new life begins again.

This is the heartbeat of the Gospel:

👉 Jesus is not just the forgiver of sins—He is the giver of life.

And that life is made real in us through the Holy Spirit.

Steady in Faith

The Spirit Stabilizes Us in a Shaky World

Jesus said:

“I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth… he lives with you and will be in you.” — John 14:16–17 (NIV)

The word advocate means one who comes alongside to help.

But it’s even better than that. The Spirit doesn’t just come alongside us—He lives within us.

And we need that.

Because life is hard.

  • We all face doubt

  • We all wrestle with fear

  • None of us are immune to pressure

Without the Spirit, our faith is like a machine without stabilizers—it tips under pressure.

But with the Spirit?

We become steady.

Grounded.

Anchored.

Unshaken—even when life gets heavy.

Strong in Conviction

The Spirit Guides Us Into Truth

We live in a world where truth feels harder and harder to find.

Between social media, misinformation, and competing voices, it’s easy to feel uncertain about what’s real.

But Jesus gives us this promise:

“When he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth…” — John 16:13 (NIV)

The Holy Spirit is called the Spirit of Truth.

That means when everything else feels confusing, we’re not left guessing.

The Spirit helps us build real conviction—not based on opinions, trends, or emotions—but on truth.

He guides us in understanding:

  • Who Jesus is

  • What truth is

  • How we should live

  • Where we need to grow

And that kind of conviction changes you.

I know it did for me.

There was a time I was timid, soft, unsure. Some people might’ve even called me a “marshmallow.”

But over time, through the work of the Spirit, something changed.

Not arrogance—conviction.

Not harshness—clarity.

Not fear—confidence in truth.

That’s what the Spirit does.

Spiritually Present

The Spirit Helps Us Live Fully in What Matters

Jesus said:

“Remain in my love… If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love.” — John 15:9–10 (NIV)

Notice what He didn’t say.

He didn’t say:

  • “If you believe…”

  • “If you attend…”

He said:

👉 “If you keep my commands.”

This is about obedience—a life aligned with Him.

And what’s the result?

Presence.

The kind of presence that says: “I’m not going to miss what matters most.”

In a world constantly pulling for your attention, the Spirit helps you:

  • Slow down

  • Pay attention

  • Show up fully

Because spiritual presence is powerful.

It’s felt in conversations.

It’s seen in relationships.

It draws people in.

Sometimes the most impactful thing you can do isn’t say more—it’s simply be present in the Spirit.

Why the Spirit Is a Gift

Jesus said something that must have sounded shocking to His disciples:

“It is for your good that I am going away… unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you.” — John 16:7 (NIV)

How could that possibly be good?

Because while Jesus, in the flesh, could only be in one place at a time…

Through His death, resurrection, and return to heaven, He made a way for the Spirit to dwell in every believer.

Not just around you.

Not just near you.

But within you.

That means:

  • You are never alone

  • You are always being guided

  • You are constantly being strengthened

The Spirit is God’s presence in you—helping you become who He’s called you to be.

The Life the Spirit Provides

So what does the Spirit actually produce in us?

A life that is:

Steady in Faith

Not shaken by pressure

Strong in Conviction

Rooted in truth

Spiritually Present

Fully engaged in what matters most

Final Thought

Jesus didn’t just save you from something—He saved you for something.

A life that is full.A life that is anchored.A life that is guided by His Spirit every single day.

That is the life the Spirit provides.
