Spiritual Insurance: Avoiding the Mayhem of Sin

Senior Pastor Daniel Macaluso

James 4:13–17 | Galatians 5:19–26

We insure almost everything in life.

Our cars.

Our homes.

Our health.

Our identity.

Many of us carry multiple forms of protection in case something goes wrong. We plan ahead because we understand that life is unpredictable. Accidents happen. Circumstances change. One moment everything is fine, and the next moment everything can be different.

But there’s an important question many of us rarely ask:

Are we insured spiritually?

Life Is a Mist

James reminds us just how fragile life really is:

“Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” — James 4:14

Think about that image for a moment. If you spray a mist into the air, it’s there for a second and then it’s gone.

That’s how Scripture describes our lives.

Yet many of us live as if tomorrow is guaranteed. We make plans, pursue success, and chase after what we want without stopping to consider God’s will. James warns that this kind of thinking leads to arrogance—believing we control our future rather than submitting it to God.

The reality is that our lives are temporary, and the choices we make today shape both our present and our eternity.

The Mayhem of Sin

When we live apart from God’s guidance, Scripture says the result is chaos. In Galatians 5, the apostle Paul describes what happens when people follow the desires of the flesh:

“The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.” — Galatians 5:19–21

These aren’t just abstract sins. They lead to real-world consequences.

Sexual immorality can result in broken relationships, unwanted pregnancies, disease, and lifelong emotional wounds.

Hatred produces racism, violence, revenge, and wars.

Jealousy and envy create division and bitterness between people.

Selfish ambition hurts families, coworkers, teammates, and friends.

Greed pushes us into debt and living a life built on appearances.

Drunkenness destroys credibility, harms our bodies, and can lead to tragic decisions.

Sin brings what we might call spiritual mayhem.

And many of us know this firsthand. If we’re honest, we’ve all compromised in certain areas. Sometimes we justify our behavior. Sometimes we assume grace will cover whatever we choose to do.

But Scripture warns us not to treat grace as permission to live however we want.

Sins We Commit—and Sins We Omit

James also reminds us of a type of sin many people overlook:

“If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.” — James 4:17

There are sins of action, the things we actively do wrong. But there are also sins of omission—the good things we know we should do but choose not to.

Failing to forgive.

Ignoring someone in need.

Remaining silent when we should speak truth.

Avoiding obedience when God calls us to act.

Spiritual health isn’t just about avoiding wrongdoing—it’s about actively choosing what is right.

Living Under God’s Protection

The good news is that God doesn’t leave us defenseless against the chaos of sin. When we commit our lives to Jesus and walk by the Spirit, our lives begin to change.

Galatians describes the result:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” — Galatians 5:22–23

Instead of chaos, the Spirit produces something beautiful.

Love that supports and encourages others.

Joy that doesn’t depend on circumstances.

Peace that replaces bitterness and insecurity.

Self-control that frees us from addictions and destructive decisions.

Purpose that gives our lives meaning and direction.

This is what life looks like when we live under what we might call Spiritual Insurance—the covering that comes from walking with Jesus and obeying God’s Word.

A Neighbor Who Is Always There

Insurance companies promise protection when things go wrong. But even the best policies have limits.

Jesus offers something far greater.

When we belong to Him, we are never alone. We have a Savior who walks with us, guides us, and advocates for us even when we fail.

Scripture gives us this incredible assurance:

“If anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins.” — 1 John 2:1–2

Jesus doesn’t just warn us about sin—He paid the price for it. His grace restores us when we fall and gives us the power to live differently.

The Choice We All Must Make

Life is a mist. None of us knows how long we have.

The question is not whether we will face eternity—it’s whether we are ready for it.

God invites us to step under His covering today. To surrender our plans, follow His ways, and live in step with the Spirit.

When we do, the mayhem of sin loses its power, and we discover a life filled with purpose, peace, and eternal hope.

So the question becomes simple:

What are you waiting for?

If you know the good you ought to do, today is the day to choose it.
