Vessel Church Walks Out of the Darkness with AFSP Buffalo

This September, members of Vessel Church had the privilege of joining our Buffalo community for the Out of the Darkness Walk to Prevent Suicide, hosted by the Buffalo Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).

It was a meaningful day of remembrance, support, community, and, most importantly, hope.

Walking Together for Hope

The Out of the Darkness Walk brings together individuals, families, friends, organizations, and communities who have been impacted by suicide and mental health struggles. Some walk in memory of someone they love. Others walk in support of someone who is struggling, to share their own story, or simply to stand alongside those who need to know they aren't alone.

For Vessel Church, participating in the walk was an opportunity to live out something we believe deeply: even in the darkest seasons, there is hope.

Our Senior Pastor, Daniel Macaluso, and his band 5D were honored to perform during the event, using music to encourage and inspire those gathered for the walk.

We were also grateful to have members of our Thrive and Horizons ministries participate in the walk and represent Vessel Church. Seeing different generations from our church family come together in support of such an important cause was incredibly special.

Called Out of Darkness and Into Light

The message behind the Out of the Darkness Walk connects powerfully with the hope we find throughout Scripture.

1 Peter 2:9 reminds us that God has “called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.”

Darkness can take many forms. Grief, depression, loneliness, fear, hopelessness, and seasons when it feels difficult to see what comes next can weigh heavily on a person.

As followers of Jesus, we want to be people who are willing to enter those difficult spaces with others—not with judgment, but with compassion, love, support, and hope.

We believe the Church should be a place where people know they don't have to walk through the darkness alone.

Supporting the Fight Against Suicide

We are incredibly thankful for the work the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is doing both nationally and here in the Buffalo community. Through education, advocacy, research, community programs, and support for those affected by suicide, AFSP continues to bring greater awareness to suicide prevention and mental health.

The walk may be over, but the opportunity to support this work continues.

We encourage our church family and community to consider donating to AFSP and supporting the ongoing fight against suicide and hopelessness. Every conversation, every person who chooses to show up, and every effort to remind someone that their life matters can make a difference.
