An Instrument Useful to God

Pastor Daniel Macaluso playing guitar while preaching at Vessel Church

2 Timothy 2:20–22 (CSB)

“Now in a large house there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also those of wood and clay; some for honorable use and some for dishonorable. So if anyone purifies himself from anything dishonorable, he will be a special instrument, set apart, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.”

When Paul wrote to Timothy, he compared people to instruments or vessels in a great house. Some are used for special purposes — to bring glory to God — and others, sadly, for dishonor. But here’s the key: anyone can become an instrument useful to God. It’s not about talent, title, or background — it’s about preparation and purity.

Just like learning to play an instrument, it takes effort, discipline, and practice to be ready for God’s use.

Instrument Useful to God: Learn to Play It

It’s never been easier to learn something new — you can hop on YouTube or even ask ChatGPT how to do almost anything. When I was younger, we had to slow down vinyl records to figure out the fast parts of a song. I can still hear my mom asking, “What on earth are you listening to?”

Today, the same thing is true for the Bible. We have more resources than ever — online Bibles, access to the original Greek and Hebrew, historical studies, and archaeology. But information doesn’t make us useful to God — application does.

There’s music for every mood — from “Walking on Sunshine” to “Back in Black.” Likewise, there’s a verse in Scripture for every emotion and every circumstance. God’s Word is the playlist for your life.

So what does it take to be an instrument useful to God? Let’s look at three steps.

1. Get the Rules

1 John 2:3–6 (NIV) “We know that we have come to know Him if we keep His commands… Whoever claims to live in Him must live as Jesus did.”

If you want to make music, you’ve got to learn the rules — tuning, chords, timing, rhythm. It’s no different spiritually. Jesus is our rulebook, not our feelings and not our comfort zones.

How can we live like Him if we don’t know how He lived? That’s why we have Scripture.

An instrument that’s out of tune might still sound okay to the untrained ear, but to the Master, it’s off. In the same way, we can be sincerely wrong if we’re not aligned with God’s truth.

So ask yourself:

  • How well do I know God’s Word?

  • Do I value learning His ways as much as I value my own opinions?

  • Am I confident in my salvation but unsure of His commands?

If we want to be instruments useful to God — we must first get the rules.

2. Get a Teacher

Matthew 28:18–20 (NIV)“Go and make disciples of all nations… teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”

Disciples aren’t born — they’re made. Mentorship is God’s method for growth. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

Think about it: every area of life has coaches or teachers — sports, jobs, music. You can’t learn the guitar solo in “Back in Black” without someone showing you the pentatonic scale. Yet spiritually, pride often keeps us from asking for help.

Teachers save us time. They correct our mistakes. They help us grow faster.

Parents, imagine if our kids asked for advice before every big decision — how different life would be! The same goes for us. God places wise teachers, pastors, and mentors in our lives so we can become more like Jesus.

If we want to be instruments useful to God — we must get a teacher.

3. Get in a Band

Proverbs 11:14 (NIV) “For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.” 1 Corinthians 12:20–27 (NIV) “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.”

Church isn’t a building — it’s a band. The Greek word ekklesia means a group of people with a common purpose.

When a band plays in perfect sync, it’s powerful. Each musician listens to the others, blending their sound. The same is true in the body of Christ — when we serve together in unity, the result is harmony.

There’s more power when we don’t go it alone. A single voice can sing, but a three-part harmony can move hearts. Sometimes we lead, sometimes we play rhythm, but we always play together.

If we want to be instruments useful to God — we must get in a band.

The Final Chord

Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 12:12–13 that though we are many, we form one body through the Spirit. Jesus’ death made it possible for every one of us to join the band — the family of believers — and take our part in God’s great song.

Let’s tune our hearts, learn the rules, listen to our teachers, and play together in harmony. Then we’ll truly be instruments useful to the Master, ready for every good work.
